Who We Are

The American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) was established in 1956 to develop an endowment fund in the United States for The University of the West Indies (UWI). Over the past decades, AFUWI has provided scholarships and grants and funded many special projects to foster the development of the University of the West Indies.
The original patrons of the Foundation included such distinguished individuals as Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Her Royal Highness, Princess Alice. Today, AFUWI patrons include actor and songwriter Dr Harry Belafonte; Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott; and Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, individuals that are committed to creating increased educational opportunities for generations of West Indian people to come.

Mission

To source and administer private donations, maximize philanthropic efforts, and develop strategic alliances with American corporations, foundations, alumni and other organizations, primarily to provide scholarships, support academic programs and facilitate development projects at The University of the West Indies (UWI)
The University community is made up of the 17 member countries of Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominican, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kits & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago and Turks & Caicos.

Mandate

The Foundation has more recently intensified its focus on supporting the University’s scholarship program because of the urgent and increasing demand for financial aid from many in the student population who are talented, ambitious and determined to break the cycle of poverty, but face severe economic hardships.
In addition, the Foundation also seeks to facilitate activities which will promote the wellbeing and strengthening of the West Indian society through community service, research programs and public service endeavors for the preservation/creation of a robust cultural and social legacy.
